  • Descrição: María Zambrano and Francisco Ayala are considered, from the perspective of the 21st century, in addition to great creators, the highest exponents of essay writing of their generation, within the framework of the “silver age” of Spanish literature. There are numerous parallels between the two (it is more complex to speak of interinfluences) that have not yet been sufficiently highlighted, and that are very revealing of the cultural field in which they develop their writing; from some common sources (especially Cervantes, Schopenhauer, Unamuno and Ortega, profoundly reinterpreted by both); of values and keys to better understand the crucial time they lived and their experience of exile. But almost more interesting are the nuances and divergences that —even from common concerns— we appreciate in the work of one and the other. With very different characters and with different worldviews, Zambrano and Ayala will be the maximum expression in their time, respectively, of original poetic thought and narrative and essay writing driven by the search for meaning and by the effort to explain the world. The idealism that Zambrano sometimes arrives at never completely loses contact with reality; Ayalian realism governed by ethics is never alien to ideality. These dimensions appear clearer if we put them in counterpoint. An in-depth investigation of what we are proposing exceeds the scope of this contribution, which we offer as a first outline of these pending tasks and the possible paths they could take in the future, through numerous partial approaches or even a monographic investigation. María Zambrano y Francisco Ayala son considerados, desde la perspectiva del siglo XXI, además de grandes creadores, los más altos exponentes de la escritura ensayística de su generación, en el marco de la «edad de plata» de la literatura española. Entre ambos hay numerosos paralelismos (es más complejo hablar de interinfluencias) que aún no han sido suficientemente destacados, pero que son muy reveladores del campo cultural en que desarrollan su escritura; de algunas fuentes comunes (especialmente Cervantes, Schopenhauer, Unamuno y Ortega, profundamente reinterpretados por ambos); de valores y claves para entender mejor el tiempo crucial que vivieron y su experiencia del exilio. Pero casi más interesantes son los matices y divergencias que —incluso desde inquietudes comunes— apreciamos en la obra de una y de otro. De caracteres muy diferentes y con cosmovisiones distintas, Zambrano y Ayala serán la máxima expresión en su tiempo, respectivamente, de un pensamiento poético original y de una escritura narrativa y ensayística impulsadas por la búsqueda del sentido y por el empeño de dar razón del mundo. El idealismo al que a veces llega Zambrano no pierde nunca del todo el contacto con la realidad; el realismo ayaliano regido por la ética nunca es ajeno a la idealidad. Estas dimensiones aparecen más claras si las ponemos en contrapunto. Una investigación a fondo de cuanto planteamos excede el ámbito de esta aportación, que ofrecemos como un primer esbozo de esas tareas pendientes y de las posibles vías por las que podrían discurrir en el futuro, a través de numerosas aproximaciones parciales o incluso de una investigación monográfica de más largo aliento.
