Introduction - reveals the research methods used to gather data on major trends in artistic production & distribution & the relation between artists, critics, & galleries. PART I - PRELIMINARIES - contains (1) Antecedents -- details several milestones leading to impressionist art gaining social acceptance & success in the marketplace & includes a historical outline of artistic life in France; & (2) Multiple Markets -- examines the various markets for painting & explores the differences between conservative & progressive painting, & the Paris & provincial markets. PART II - THE ACTORS - offers (3) Art Dealers -- through 1958/59 & 1962/63 survey research, signifies different types of art dealers & contrasts the traditional dealer who sells works of established painters with entrepreneurs who support new kinds of painting; (4) Art Critics -- describes the position of professional art critics in the French art market & their cultural & economic functions; (5) Collectors -- based on interview data of 90 art collectors, examines the impact that major art collectors have on the art market & offers a typology of collectors; & (6) Painters -- describes artistic careers & their relation to the art market & explores the artist's standard of living. PART III - TRANSACTIONS - provides (7) From Junk to Masterworks -- examines the question of aesthetic value through contrasting the market for old masters & sidewalk painters; (8) The Market for Contemporary Painting -- describes the market for new art, the relation between production & consumption, & how prices for works of living artists are determined; & (9) Summary and Conclusion -- examines the impact that dealers can have on the price of art & provides an overview of the structure of the art market.
