  • Descrição: A few years before the Great Famine in 1845, Baron József Eötvös, a Hungarian novelist and politician greatly concerned by humanitarian issues, travelled in Ireland, and was deeply disturbed by the rampant poverty and British mismanagement he saw. He published his impressions in a book called Poverty in Ireland, 1837—A Hungarian’s View and wrote: ‘Everywhere people are in rags, and wearing the traces of hunger and disease on their pale faces.’¹ A few decades later Ireland’s struggle for freedom (1912–1922) was the object of several books by Hungarian authors and was commented upon in the national press during
