  • Descrição: An introduction to a special issue on, "Security, Technologies of Risk, & the Political," addresses the increased interest in risk & its relation to security & politics. Early notions of risk in the field of international relations tended to conflate risk with danger/threat & to view security threats as socially constructed. However, the contributors to this volume argue that dealing with risk is far more complicated. The implications of identifying the referent of protection in terms of risk are pointed out, along with the differences between threat-based & risk-based perspectives of security. While threat-based perspectives focus on intent & agency between conflicting actors, risk-based outlooks emphasize such systemic characteristics as populations at risk of disease or environmental hazard. In addition, threat-based interpretations depend on intelligence to eliminate danger while their risk-based counterparts rely on data, modeling, & speculations that encompass strategies for eliminating risk. Taken together the articles in this special issue invite readers to consider how "security practices instantiate the political in the very process of (in)securing specific forms of life.".
