  • Descrição: This paper deals with the information on the Balkan Slavs available in England during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and the English perception of and attitudes to the inhabitants of the region. On the basis of an analysis of the main English sources and translations into English of continental writings, the article seeks to establish the image of the Slavs as conceived by the average educated Englishman of the epoch. The basic traits of this image mirrored the English idea of a marginal European 'otherness' during a time when the foundations of the modern English world-view were being established. The basic aim of the article is to provide an outline of these English attitudes which should be taken into account when subsequent English policy regarding the peninsula and its peoples is investigated.
