Descrição:
This essay aims to bridge the gap between dramaturgical and political analyses of Henry VIII by showing how the dramaturgical decisions shaping the play both express and inform its political concerns. It focuses in particular on the depiction of Katherine of Aragon, exploring the way in which the construction of her role renders her crucial to the play's interrogation of the proper limits of monarchical power. In doing so it considers the impact of factors including Fletcher and Shakespeare's deployment of their sources and their interest in enhancing the ability of tragicomedy to move an audience. New ways of situating Katherine in relation to the performative strategies of her fellow queen consort, Anna of Denmark, at the Jacobean court are also investigated. The picture of Katherine which emerges questions readings which claim that the play diminishes her political challenge in line with the alleged tenor of her popular image and situates her within what this study identifies as the play's wider commentary on the intersection between performance, spectatorship and political power.
