  • Descrição: We have obtained a planar-to-homeotropic structure transition in a smectic-A liquid crystal under electric field. The mechanisms involved in this transition are described and explained. The most important feature is the nucleation of a new type of defect which gives rise to a network of focal conics, then to a quasihomeotropic structure.
