  • Descrição: Optical ultrasonic sensors have been commonly used in research laboratories long before Monchalin’s classic review paper entitled “Optical Detection of Ultrasound” [1] in 1986 and yet, optical ultrasonic sensors have not made a successful transition from the laboratory to industry. This sensing technology has had plenty of time to mature. In fact, the components which comprise the optical sensors have been significantly enhanced during this time period. Despite the large gains in gas laser, solid state laser, diode laser, photodiode, fiber optic, non-linear optic, electronic design, data acquisition, and general sensing technology since 1986, optical ultrasonic sensors have not made it out of the laboratory and into industry.
