  • Descrição: 01 02 The European Union considers it is influential in shaping global politics and has secured a reserved seat at every significant international table. However, this self-asserted confidence raises a number of questions. What is the nature of the EU's roles in the world? How is the EU seen in third countries and to what extent is it influential in setting global agendas? Has the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis made others outside Europe question the EU's capacity to deliver on its aspirations and promises? This cutting edge collection addresses these questions by drawing on a number of substantive research projects concerning EU external perceptions. It presents theoretically grounded empirical analyses from which evidence-based public diplomacy recommendations can be drawn and focuses on the evolution of the EU's external image before and after the Lisbon Treaty, as well as before and after the outbreak of the Eurozone crisis. Exploring how it is viewed externally and the impact of events such as the Eurozone debt crisis, this book offers a true reflection of the EU as an international actor. 08 02 The book demonstrates that work on external perceptions of the EU has matured into a distinctive field of study that is greatly enriching the study of Europe. The volume is an excellent blend of conceptual sophistication and a range of detailed case studies. The especial strength of Communicating Europe in Times of Crisis is that in a single volume it presents the cutting edge of research on external perceptions whilst setting the agenda for future study. Richard Whitman, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Kent, UK This volume gathers together an important body of research on a rapidly developing area of study, and shows that there is real substance to the investigations that can be carried out across disciplinary boundaries to explore the EU's impact on perceptions and policies in other regions of the world. As such, it not only makes a substantial contribution to the development of the field but also sets an agenda for future enquiry. Michael Smith, Department of Politics, History and International Relations, Loughborough University, UK 13 02 Martin Holland is Jean Monnet Chair Ad Personam, National Centre for Research on Europe, University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Natalia Chaban is Jean Monnet Chair, National Centre for Research on Europe, University of Canterbury, New Zealand. 02 02 The EU views itself as an important actor on the world stage, a perspective supported by the role it plays in global politics. This collection presents a true reflection of the EU as an international actor by exploring how it is viewed externally and the impact that events like the Eurozone debt crisis have had on external perceptions of the EU. 16 02 Previous titles by Holland and Chaban on 'EU Perceptions' are the most direct competition; however, these titles are all somewhat dated now.
