Continuum radiation of nitrogen plasmas from 2500 to 20 000 Å, at atmospheric pressures and at temperatures ranging from 10 000 to 17 000°K, has been studied experimentally and theoretically. It is shown (from an analysis of the literature and of our experiments) that the observed radiation intensities for air and nitrogen plasma under our experimental conditions are significantly higher than theoretical predictions. In the theory, account is taken of molecular radiation, atomic lines, electron-ion photo-recombination, electron-ion and electron-neutral bremsstrahlung. The magnitudes and the causes of the observed discrepancies are investigated. The electron-ion continuum calculation technique is re-examined and the shifts of the photoionization edges ar taken from experiment. The excess radiation is explained as resulting from photoattachment of the negative nitrogen ion. The required photodetachment cross section is derived from experimental data. This value is compared with theoretical and experimental results obtained by other authors. Qualitative differencies between experimental data at 10–100 and 1 atm are discussed. Other possibilities to account for the observed excess radiation are also considered.
